When I first rolled my character I didn't realize that Bastard Swords can only be wielded one-handed with exotic weapon proficiency. As a result I created a fighter build that uses a bastard sword and a heavy shield. Now I'm level 2 and just took Weapon Focus: Bastard sword as my fighter bonus feat. I really don't want to get rid of my shield because I imagined this as a mainly heavy defense build, but I'm pretty much restricted to using it with my secondary weapon (chakrams) until I take exotic weapon proficiency. Another thing to note is that I've had 2 GMs (Bakrehna and Wyatt) look at my sheet before it was approved and neither of them made a comment about the fact I'm using a bastard sword and a shield when *technically* I shouldn't be able to. I didn't even know it was against the rules myself until I looked up bastard swords for an unrelated reason.

Hey, we are not gonna tell you how to play your character. I have seen people go with the penalties.

You can do so, you just take that -4 penalty. However, fun little fact, I'm not sure you can have weapon focus in it since you don't actually have its proficiency. Something to look into.

Ok... the rule I read (on pathfinder OGC) says you need martial to wield a bastard sword as a two-handed weapon and exotic to wield it as one-handed. So should I still be able to retain the benefits of weapon focus if I were to wield it as a two-handed weapon and not use a shield?
