Constantine was discreetly keeping an eye on the mysterious half-elf posing as a human. He noticed him saying good bye to the other half-elf, the one he met in the square, and heading for the door.
"Effigy if something bad happens be ready to jump in." He left his seat before the orc had a chance to respond and with a brisk pace headed to intercept the leaving stranger.
"Hey there my good man! What brings you to our fair city?" He paused waiting for the other to make a move. "The streets are a bit unsafe at this time so what do you say if we share a drink and some stories?" He managed to get between the exit and the half-elf. "I also saw that you know my friend Hal over there. Maybe you can tell me how he wandered into our lands. I bet it's an interesting story."
He was ready for anything the cornered man could throw at him. He already had a Daze spell that he could unleash if the half-elf proved dangerous. Just needed to utter the magic words and he would put him out for a while, giving time for the orc to enter the fray. He also had the orc's longsword if the spell failed and he could throw that even if it was unwieldy. The pieces were set, now he only needed for the other to act.

Hal nodded in appreciation when the man paid his drinks, and thanked him as he left the tavern. No matter how ordinary looking that man was, there is something not quite ordinary about him. Either way, Hal decide to wait a little bit longer, perhaps that warden the bartender said will show up, maybe that wizard is one of the holder, or maybe the warden himself. Until then, he has new enemies to defeat, and that is a big chunk of sausage and cheese with a mug of ale he just ordered. It's been a long day, and he has not eaten much. However, before he could get his hands on his meal, that man's way out blocked by the wizard and his orc companion. Hal turned around to see what is going on, what is going to happen. "Hmm, should I summon my eidolon armor? Just in case?" Hal decide to utter the calling words slowly under his breath, hoping the conversation between that man and the wizard last for at least a minute. He's a bit hesitant whenever he summon his armor, as it somehow alter his personality bit by bit. Nevertheless, he would rather not be caught unprepared this time.

"Hey there my good man! What brings you to our fair city?" the wizard spoke as he planted himself between Aegoth and the door. "The streets are a bit unsafe at this time so what do you say if we share a drink and some stories?" "I also saw that you know my friend Hal over there. Maybe you can tell me how he wandered into our lands. I bet it's an interesting story."
“Ugh, by Abadur why did this have to happen now,” Aegoth thought.” Gotta be careful with my next words a wrong step and he could turn me into a newt or something of the like…”
Aegoth observed the figure in front of him. He wore a scholarly robe and had a long sword that seemed a bit out of touch with the rest of his costume. His face had signs of wrinkles but his voice was that of a young man of his age.
Stopping, Aegoth only calmly smiled and replied, ”Oh I am just a simple traveler stopping by this city, I thank you for your warning young master”. “I was just addressing Hal regarding the happening earlier in the city market.” “Now if you may pardon me, I would like to go on a stroll through your wonderful city. I do believe it will help calm my nerves”
Touching the handle of his sword, Aegoth then smiled,” And believe me you needn’t worry about my own safety out there young master. I may be young, but I have braved my fair share of dangers”
He then proceeded to try and step around the wizard and towards the doorway.

As the smooth talking adventure turned to walk past Constantine he ran into the chest of Effigy. "The little man lies." Effigy looked over at Constantine, "My orc ears here them talk. He either lie to you or the one over there." Effigy pointed across to the bar where the half-elf could be seen muttering something.
"I hear him describe belonging to this city and now he say to you he is not. I believe he is lying or Effigy just confused." If the man was lying his face did not betray him one bit. Perhaps I am wrong, Effigy thought, he looks like a good person.
"So little man, which is it?"

Hm… so the Orc overheard our conversation? I better keep a note on that,” Aegoth thought. “He does sound a bit dimwitted however, maybe I can talk my way out of this one.”
“Well, easy there my good Orc,” he said keeping his distance from the rather scary looking orc. “This little man wasn’t lying to your friend here, and if I did happen to come off as a liar I dearly apologize for my behavior.”
He continued,” A young traveler like this little man doesn’t stay too long in each city, but he considers each city that he stays in as a home no matter how short his stay is. That is what I meant when I described myself as a member of this city. I assure you I mean no harm,” Aegoth spoke with a cheerful tone.
“Now if you will excuse me my good sirs,” will you let me past? I do of course intend to clear my nerves a bit from this afternoon’s events, and as a traveler I do wish to see as much of this city as I can,” he asked.
“And of course see what riches are ripe for the taking,” he mentally smirked as an afterthought.

" ...and as a traveler I do wish to see as much of this city as I can."
The wizard smirked. "A traveler you say. How impolite of me. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Constantine, Holder of Knowledge and, due to some unforeseen events, Warden of this beautiful city. I meant no harm by stopping you. It's just that we are quite isolated here and we must rely on travelers like you to know what happens out there. So what do you say if you join me at one of the tables and share some stories about your travels. After that I promise to show you the city myself, and send some guards to guarantee your safety." He smiled and gestured towards one of the free tables.

Effigy assessed he would no longer be needed in the situation as he headed to leave the inn. There was going to be an epedition to the north later and he had stuff he needed to do first.
He walked back to the market where they were attacked earlier to look for signs of where shadow knife went. There had to be a clue somewhere and now he had the time to look.

One minute passed, the wait is over, Hal is now standing near them wearing his black eidolon armor. Though it may looked like a full plate armor, it is alive, pulsing with arcane magic. This time, if anything show up, like those assassins for example, he won't be caught unprepared. There is one problem though, his mind is now a bit too focused and brooding, replacing his usual relaxed and mild-mannered demeanor. The bartender looked a bit alarmed, which is quite understandable. Hal decide to stand ready, watching the conversation. He is ready to spring into action should something undesirable happens. For a moment he glance at his food plate."Wait for me alright, I'll gobble you guys up once this is over." And then the orc decide to walked out of the tavern. "If he decide to go out, does that mean the situation is okay now." Hal didn't make any movement, he decide to wait.

-“So what do you say if you join me at one of the tables and share some stories about your travels. After that I promise to show you the city myself, and send some guards to guarantee your safety.”
“Well, it looks like you won’t be talking yourself out of this one,” thought Aegoth.
“Very well, I suppose I would be a rude guest to decline such a wonderful offer of hospitality,” Aegoth chuckled. However, all sorts of possibilities and scenarios ran through his mind. He imagined saying something wrong and being vaporized into nothingness. Worse he might be turned into a frog and be used him for some bizarre experiment. In fact, Aegoth envied such power and had occasionally basked in the thought of being able to do the same. However, in the present time he was mostly consumed with terror. Wizards were an unpredictable lot with powers that were beyond Aegoth’s contemplation. Being subjected to the scrutiny of one was one of the last things Aegoth wished to happen.
"That and he has his orc lackey who could tear off your head, and eat your entrails..." he thought.
Nonetheless, several years of bluffing his way through multiple life-threatening encounters gave him the resilience to keep a calm face. At least physically.
Aegoth proceeded to take a seat at the nearby table and smiled towards the wizard asking," But where are my manners! You may call me Eratus. And what is your name young master?"

Hal waited and waited, yet nothing sprang up just yet. Maybe it's safe, maybe it's not. After a while another person came in and greets the wizard and that ordinary looking man. All seems okay for now. Hal decide that he should continue his meal, with his eidolon armor on. It's not like the armor hinder his movement in any way, but if the armor is ensuring his safety, he doesn't mind looking awkward. And so the wait continues, with sausage, cheese, and a mug of ale as company.

Constantine started towards the table but stopped for a second to ask for Hal to join them. He took notice of his eidolon, more so as it was making his aura glow three times brighter. He knew what an eidolon was but his knowledge about them stopped there. He took a seat in front of Eratus, if that was his name, and gestured the barmaids to bring some fresh ale. Instead of a barmaid it was Sadris that came and brought them their drinks. He smiled at him.
"Ah, Sadris. Feeling better? If so I may have a task for you later." He took his ale and raised it in toast. "For travelers, may they be safe, the life blood of trade." He watched to others raise their drinks too and then took a gulp of ale.
"So, Eratus, what brings you to our fair city? Are you a craftsman of sorts? Or maybe a bard?" The chat picked up with Constantine asking the other two about themselves and answering their questions about the city. The ale kept coming.
"... and I was telling you one of our party rushes forward and out of view, we rush after him and stumble upon a camp of hobgoblins. We..." He suddenly stopped as the force of the incoming sending overwhelmed his mind for a few moments. Being so drawn into the discussion at hand he ignored Mak's warning that a minor magic aura was entering the area and he was caught unprepared. He regained his composure quite fast but not fast enough for the other 2 at the table not to notice.

Aegoth was deep into the conversation with Constantine and the newcomer Sadris. As he listened to Constantine's tale he smiled and laughed at points that seemed appropriate for such acts.
"Well this is going along pleasantly, the wizard isn't as bat crazy as I thought he would be," Aegoth thought.
Suddenly in the midst of his tale, Constantine suddenly seemed to falter a bit.
"Are you okay young master?" Aegoth asked.

The old wizard called him to join in a table with the ordinary man from the beginning and another person named Sadris who just came to the tavern. Well, it looks like everything is indeed okay, thought Hal. So he grab his plate and mug and sat next to the wizard. They began to talk more comfortably and learned the wizard's name, Constantine Ilfrey. Hal still had his eidolon armor on, not because he didn't trust them, but because the armor didn't hinder his movement whatsoever that he forgot he still wearing it. Nonetheless, he answered the wizard that his intention of coming to Hammerstad is to carve a place for himself in the world. Of all other known factions or nations, Volkenheim is, as Hal believed, more neutral in many aspects. He'd rather not be involved in a complex political struggle or extremities, and he find the life of craftsman and hired adventurer in Volkenheim seems like a better choice for a simple and straightforward guy like him. However, before he can talk any further, he sense there is something wrong with the wizard. He glance around to look what had bothered the wizard.

((Is you char named Eratus or Aegoth? Or did he gave me a false name?))
"Are you okay young master?"
"I am fine. I think I had a bit to many drinks." The lie slipped naturally into his mind and he put forwards without any hesitation. He looked towards the windows. "I didn't realize it is so late already, I guess that's what happen when you have pleasant company. But I'm afraid I have to leave you now. Hal please pass by the Warden's House tomorrow as I may have a job for you. As for you my kind traveler I will send a guard sergeant to accompany you if you still want to take a stroll at this hour. Like I said the streets are unsafe at these hours." He raised from the table. "Now you'll have to excuse me. Tell Otto I will pay for your drinks and food tonight. It's my way of thanking you for listening and sharing your stories with me."
He then passed by the bar, took his staff and addressed to Sadris who was fiddling with some dishes. "Sadris pass by the Warden's House tomorrow so we can discuss what I need from you. If the guards stop you at the gates tell them I sent for you and that it's urgent. And I'm glad to see you are better. Don't force yourself." He smiled at Sadris who nodded and he headed towards the exit.
It was dark outside so he muttered some words and a light appeared in his hand. From above a dark shadow descended and perched on his shoulder. In the magic light it was made clear that it was an owl, Mak. "Tired old friend?" The owl adjusted his position on the shoulder as not to fall when the wizard started walking. "Not at all. It was a smart move to use me as the focus of your spell. You are getting better each passing day. Also for the last hour I was perched in a tree." A small aura could be felt from the guard house they were heading to, a lingering shadow of the burst from earlier in the day. "Demon magic, in our city." The owl cooed faintly. The wizards entered the guardhouse and found the new sergeant asleep, from the prisoner's cell only silence. He shook the sergeant and disturbed his sleep.
"Warden, sir, I wasn't expecting you at this hour."
"It's alright sergeant. I just want to see the prisoner again. Will you open the door for me?" The sergeant fumbled to his feet got the keys from a hook on the wall and opened the cell door. The mage entered followed shortly by the guard. Under the magic light the prisoner was nowhere to be seen. Constantine looked at the guard and wanted to admonish him for not being careful. Before he could speak the cell was filled with a demonic aura and a rasped voice started speaking infernal. The wizard raised his hand and gave the magic light a slight push and it started to hover above them. In the now better light they could see that the prisoner was sitting in a previously dark corner of the room. A bloody trail led from him to the table he was chained to earlier. On the table there were the remains of his hands. He had chewed through them to set himself free.
"Puny wizard we are coming for you. We are coming for you and your city. Everything will burn. You have taken in the traitor and now you will pay." An unnatural laugh started from the former sergeant's. He then started speaking in infernal again, repeating the same words like a broken piece of machinery. The guard was so terrorized by what was going on that he slowly backed away from the cell leaving the wizard alone with whatever was in there. The threat started again. Constantine took a few steps towards him.
"Tell your master that I am not afraid of him or his lackeys. We are ready for him. He will regret the day he started against us because we don't relent. We are like a weed that you pull out of the ground and after a few day it's back. These people have seen things that make your master seem like a joke." He managed to get close while saying all that and uttered a few words in a different language thank the Infernal he spoke earlier. A small greenish orb appeared in his palm and he shoved it in the poor creature's face. The acid started eating the flesh on his head and he was dead before he could even scream.
He exited the cell and headed towards the new sergeant. "Sergeant, I want you to lock that cell and wait until tomorrow. Tomorrow get 2 more guards and clean up the mess. You are free to go." While on the way to his sanctum Mak's voice came into his mind again. "Are you ok?" He reciprocated. "Yes I am fine. And i have a plan." He smiled.
