I've been thinking about what its like to be a wizard in the Realm of Calidor for quite a while now and came to the conclusion that it must really be a real pain. In a regular campaign getting a new spell is as easy as visiting your local magik shop and buying a couple scrolls, but in the Realm of Calidor getting new spells is almost impossible. You can copy off of other scrolls and spell books (which are two of the scarcest items in the game), you can research them (which consumes an enormous amount of time and gold) or you can drain the blood of your enemies with blood transcription (and I'm assuming people won't go to that far of an extent just to get that featherfall spell they forgot to take last level). To fix this issue I propose that we allow wizards to spend hero points in order to write more spells in their books. This should give wizards the slight push they desperately need in this unforgiving world where wizards already have hard time making it past level 3. A wizard would be able to write down a number of spells whose combined spell level does not exceed his or her highest spell level (I don't know how else to put it, sorry if its confusing). For example a 6th level wizard has access to 3rd level spells which means that if he or she were to spend a hero point they could chose to gain one more 3rd level spell, one 2nd level spell and a 1st level spell or three 1st level spells. To stop people from spontaneously gaining a new spell when its convenient (your a wizard not a sorcerer) the new spells would be added to the wizard's spell book 24 hours (in-game) after the hero point is spent. What do you guys think?

I think the wizard thing might be a good idea. Alternatively, you could allow them to just "buy" spells. That way you can pay to add stuff to spellbook, but not actually buy scrolls.

Or buy an arcane academy (Hogwarts) for one of your cities.

Would these rules apply to Magi aswell?I would assume so as they learn spells as a Wizard does, but I just wanted to clarify.

Twilight, I think buying spells makes it a little too easy. I still want to encourage wizards to organize themselves into groups and exchange their knowledge like they would normally in the early years of a fantasy setting such as this. Who knows, maybe we could have a whole faction of wizards who do nothing but that (I mean we've already got people who've dedicated themselves as crafters so why not).
As for magi (and alchemists for that matter) I can't see why the same rules wouldn't apply.

well if the wizards of the world formed a nonaligned sub group. maybe a guild of some sort. And agreed to share or trade knowledge and power on that neutral ground then maybe they would have a good way of learning spells and such. and maybe other types of caster would support this "guild" with their own considerable magical might under the idea that all casters are brothers on the business of the "guild." with dire consequences to any that betray their brethren while on "guild business. "
I say we call it the mages guild.

Maybe we could allow sorcerers to write down the spells they know in a Wizard's spellbook for the right price? That could help bring casters together. Hell, I'd do it for free.

actually if a sorcerer makes a scroll a wizard can learn the spell from it. I'm fact i will personally offer up my spells for study if those that wan them will pay the price of the scroll and can find a scroll maker.

IMHO, we can have more than one way to get the spells: 1. Mage guild (Aegis' idea). 70% discount to buy spell scrolls (except for one spell available only through the mage's guild at full price, GMs determine which spell) or trade in a spell to learn another. You need to do a mage guild quest to prove your worth before you can join the mage guild.
2. Research (though wizards might get it to make new spells (subject to 2-3 GM's approval) or to "learn" spells from a different class. ("Learning" spells from a different class is 1 higher. Example: a 2nd level druid spell becomes a 3rd level wizard spell).
3. Quests!
4. Learn from fellow players.
5. Use a hero point to learn a spell. (Samuelm's idea.)
6. Spells you can buy but not all spells are available. (GM determines which spells are available. This list changes every week and is posted in the forums). Having an arcane academy grants access to more spells (most likely, spells from last week since the arcane academy would make sure they have those)

I hope you don't mind me asking, but can't Magi use thier Knowledge Pool ability to learn&share spells?Seems like it could solve some problems...

...Thinking about it though that would be pretty broken...maybe you could limit that though?Make it around say...like a 1/every two months or so thing? EDIT: When I say 1/every 2 months or so I'm referring to the ability to copy unknown spells into your spellbook not the Knowledge Pool ability itself, just to clarify.
