The lands below were strange. Neither sand nor grasslands alone. Occasional hillsides rose and dipped slowly beneath the overhead shadow. In the air above, a giant bat beat against the winds with great wings. The sun was dipping below the horizon, and Shangori's hand went to the back of the great beast he rode atop.
Kichsei, down. You've flown long and the day was hot. Let us rest.
They drifted to the ground gently and Shangori hopped from the back of the giant bat, looking about the field. It was open and vast. Settlements could be seen distant to the south, but otherwise nothing was nearby except roaming cattle. It would make for as good a camping spot as any. Shangori swept his white hair out of his face and over the top of his head and noticed the bat staring at the wandering livestock, licking its lips.
Easy girl, soon enough. First we set camp, then dinner.
The advantage to open field was the flaw in it. Anyone could see you from far away but you could also see any threats long before they reached you. It took the better part of 10 minutes to find some tinder and rocks to make a fire pit. Even after that another 10 were spent as Shangori furiously rubbed two sticks together to make a spark. Alas, after all that time the sparks came and the tinder went ablaze to make a brilliant fire.
Good. Now, you see the fire? After you eat, you come back to the fire, ok?
The animal looked confused, so her owner repeated his instructions. After the third try, Shangori gave up shaking his head with a sigh. He would just have to hope the message got through to the beast.
Alright girl, go eat. You've earned it.
Not needing to be told that one more than once, the bat took off into the air and rushed into the twilight sky. She made a direct line towards some roaming cattle, but Shangori turned away before he could watch her swoop down on one of them. Instead, he pulled his shirt off. He balled it up and tucked it under his head as he laid by the fire and let it warm him.
