(Starday, 8th of Arodus 71 A.C.)
A lone figure wrapped in a dirty blanket walked down the streets of Hammerstad, capital of Vallenheim. From an outsider's perspective he looked like an average beggar, glumly moving from place to place. A poor fellow on an endless search for the next meal to sustain his dreary existence.
And in the mind of that exact figure, that image is precisely what he expected of those who saw him.
Aegoth walked with dirt smeared on his face, and a linen wrapped around his neck. He had pointed ears which would have immediately informed an onlooker of one half his heritage. However it was well covered up in a mass of black hair. His beard and moustache also covered up any sign of elvish grace he may have inherited. He also sported a short sword around his concealed belt. Under the linen, he also had a sack over his shoulder that carried a multitude of tools, tools that he intended to use to conduct his first major robbery in the city.
Aegoth continued down the street towards the home of the merchant.

Aegoth continued down the streets in a beggar-like manner. Local guard patrols usually walked past him without any sign of suspicion, and the ones that questioned him, usually left as soon as he started begging for coin. By the time the moon was directly up in the sky Aegoth had reached the area of the merchant's house. He stopped next to a dark alleyway.
"This looks like a good spot," he thought.
He immediately went into the alleyway and took off the large dirty linen.
He laid down the sack and pulled out the tools. He undid his tunic and reversed it, revealing several leather straps that were sewed onto its underside. Aegoth put on the reversed tunic and began to attach his tools to it. Once he was done, he took out a black cloth from the sack and wrapped it around his face, to ward off any fog he might exhale from the chilly night air. Then he took out a few strings and wrapped his hair back into a small ponytail. While wrapping, his hands grazed over his pointed ears, which made him grimace with the reminder of his hated heritage. With a final touch he adjusted his sword scabbard so it was perpendicular to his back, so it wouldn't clang around while he moved.
Once done, he wrapped the linen into the sack and placed it underneath some rubble.
"Time to move," he thought.
Aegoth peeked out the alleyway. The light was dim, but with his half-elf eyes it was as bright as day. He saw nothing suspicious.
Believing it was safe, he started moving to the back of the merchant's house.
((Feel free to have your character spot him as he moves to the merchant's house!))

Constantine was walking towards his inner sanctum with Mak on his shoulder. They were engaged in a complicated mental discussion about the last few days. In his hand there was a small sphere of light that he used to see his way on the dark streets.
"...and all we found was spice. Damned spice." The bird cooed and the alarming message he received made him aware of his surrounding instantly. The wizard gripped his staff and threw the sphere of light in the air above his head, where it started hovering. The light also became more powerful and it made things around him easier to see. The owl took flight and he followed.
He started walking towards a dark alley, the one behind Grunwald's house. Grunwald was one of the more important merchants of the city and was now away with business. He had requested papers to leave the city from him personally.
"Who goes there? Show yourself." He already knew that the one in the alley was a half-elf, as Mak already detected the familiar and faint aura from above. He started making the special signs for a spell in case the person in the alley was hostile.

Aegoth was in another alleyway behind the merchant's house. He was then greeted with a blinding flare in the sky.. He instinctively moved into the dark and shielded his eyes.
"Gods be damned, what now," he thought.
Aegoth couldn't see much in the direction of the light. However he heard someone call out, "Who goes there! Show yourself." Aegoth didn't know who it was, but he knew he was caught.
That left two choices fight or flight.
Aegoth calculated the odds in his head and made a decision.
He pulled a smokestick (bought with gold that was generously donated by the good men and women of Hammerstad) and struck it.
He let the rod roll down the street in the direction of the flare. It began to spew out a dense fog. In seconds, Aegoth ran down the street away from the blinding flare and the voice.

As he was approaching the dark part of the alley the mysterious person did something and a dense smoke started to fill the alley. Constantine realized that the intruder wanted to use the smoke to get away. He cleared the previous spell from his mind and started making the gestures for another one. The steps of the intruder could be heard in the quiet night, he was running. He sent an empathic message to Mak who then dove out of the night sky towards the target. The bird was a true predator of the night, silent and stealthy, she touched the thief and then disappeared back into the darkness. The trap was set. The Arcane Mark will make it easy to identify him unless he is a mage.
The smoke was starting to break and Constantine could see in front of him again. Strewn in the alley was a set of thieves tools and a broken stick which he identified as the source of the smoke.
"A petty thief."
While inspecting the thief's tools a city guardsman got close to see what all the commotion was. He recognized the Warden in the magic light and clicked his boot heels and shouted:
"Reporting for duty, sir!" It was the rehearsed tone of the subordinate when addressing someone in power.
"At ease soldier." He raised and headed towards the guard. "I want you to get these things here and take them to the guardhouse. It seems we have a thief in the city."
With that he gripped his staff and started again towards his sanctum. After leaving the sight of the guard, Mak landed on his shoulder.

Aegoth continued running down the streets, he ran around corners and made detours into alleyways as needed. As he was running he felt something touch his side.
"Cursed Gods, how did he keep u--," he thought. He swung out his sword and turned around into a fighting stance.
There was nothing there.
"Coulda swore something was there," he thought. He looked around and still saw nothing. Aegoth then sheathed his sword and continued running down the street as far away as he could from the merchant's house.
After a few more streets, he stopped and hid in alleyway believing he had lost whoever his pursuer was. He hid behind the corner as thoughts trickled into his head.
"What was that blinding light? Must've been a sunrod. But what guard carries around a sunrod? Maybe magic. Maybe the wizard? If it was the wizard you would be dead already. Or turned into a squirrel."
Aegoth sighed in relief when he saw no pursuers. Thats when he felt that he was a bit lighter than usual. He patted the straps on his tunic and realized that he had left the vast majority of his tools behind. With the exception of the rolled up moonrod.
"Damn it! Those were costly to acquire," he thought in frustration. "Oh well, at least I wasn't caught I don't fancy being locked up in a dungeon my first day in the city...."
Aegoth reversed his tunic, so that the leather straps faced inwards. Now it looked like a regular traveler's tunic. He took off the mask and threw it into the alleyway. He undid the wrappings around his ponytail, letting his hair back down into a scruffy mess and concealing his half-elven ears.
Aegoth thought of his next action. Guards were bound to be searching the city for him at this rate. Therefore, it would be stupid to casually walk around. They must be detaining people left and right on the streets.
Aegoth began to move back towards the Hasty Weasel Tavern. He decided the best plan was to head back to his room and wait out the night. He moved, trying to stay as stealthy as possible by using the alleyways.

"There is no point in chasing him. The mark will stay on for a whole month and the city gates are closed to normal people. He is trapped."
The bird cooed in agreement. Soon enough they were at the secret entrance. The magic light dimmed and disappeared, the night engulfing wizard and familiar.

Aegoth reached the outskirts of the inn. He looked into the window and didn't see anyone. "Guess, I'll go inside, better to wait out the night," he thought. "And what caused that blinding light? Some sort of new preventive measure for thieves maybe? I'll have to investigate tomorrow." He quietly walked into the inn and up the stairs. He walked into his room and undressed. Aegoth mind was still thinking through the past events trying to make sense out of them. However, the rush of adrenaline he had experienced was beginning to fade. Replacing it was gradually rising need to go to bed. He wrapped himself into the bedroll and tucked his sword slightly closer to him. His mind withdrew and Aegoth fell into a deep sleep.
