This is it. Maella thought to herself. This is paradise.
Waves crashing against the rocks. Gulls crying in the air. She had called this place home for twenty odd years and for good reason. Maella always felt most alive near the ocean even in the days of her orphaned youth. She struggled to remember the name of the city she came from, but all she could remember was the cool wind blowing over the docks and the taste of salt on the breeze.
The loud waves crash again upon the cove.
She remembered that day quite clear. It was a normal day. Running along the docks trying to snatch a shrimp or two off one of the fisherman stands. She remembered the next part vividly. The panicked sailor, the murmuring voices, and the local priest running down the docks with a look of dread. Maella pushed her way through the crowd. At the center was a large jet black octopus tangled in a net.
"The devils work!" They cried. "A dark omen" They screamed. Moments later their precious catch was gone and Maella was swimming deep and deeper to the depths of the sea.
The waves crashed again on the rocks.
Maella snapped out of her daydream, stretching, and walked down to the coral-reef pools where Charybdis slept.
This is it. Maella though to herself, rather sadly this time. This is my only paradise.
As she knelt down, Charybdis crawled up her leg and onto her shoulder. The tentacles were a normal sensation by now, but they still tickled her. It was only when she looked up that she saw those black sails. Maella pet Charybdis on head and with a wicked grin she said aloud as she dove into the waters "Now that... that is paradise..."
