Ok I have been doing some thinking and research and I believe I have come up with a good solution to the Use of horses for movement in the Over-world map. Normal: ANY Movement Cost MP according to current rules. docs.google.com/file/d/0BwYdWgkObduKdTVLS1B1eks5X0U/edit pg 12 Proposed Change: On Hexes that are Plains or Desert the Standard cost allows you to move UP TO 3 Hexes. On Hexes that are Mountain or Forest AND Border a Plains or Desert Hex on AT LEAST 2 sides you can move UP TO 2 hexes for the standard cost. The Standard Cost will be determined by the Hex of Destination. Restrictions: This new method only works if the ENTIRE party is riding horses or other mounts and will not affect movement on Swamp, Jungle or Water Hexes

I think we'd have to factor in the mount's movement rates and maybe favored/natural terrain. I like the "up to" mechanic alot. It's straight forward and would be easy to translate into a chart for each overland vehicle/mount.

I purposely avoided factoring in such specifics to keep this rule general and easy to apply. If you start factoring in the differences in the types of mounts and their different speeds you start getting bogged down and then you need to futhar standardize your party and thus taking away options for RP sake.
This rule as I proposed will be simple and straight forward and universal across all mounts for simplicity sake.

I like this idea for 50-70 ms creatures but I would like scaling for flight and higher ms mounts

well flight should be hands down the fastest way to move like each hex cost 1 mp as you are above anything that can slow you

Cybernx: good point. No reason to get into mount by mount minutiae, just need an acknowledgement of the transportation advantage a mount provides. Simplicity is always good.
My only concern is that the range can get pretty huge with 3 Hexes and a choice of destinations determining the whole move, especially with roads factored in.

Well I wanna keep speeds relative currently though walking on a road is as fast as a ship on the sea...
To simplify the relative speeds we should break them into tiers 20-40 50-70 80-100

It is merely worried with land based mounts of all types. Yes I am aware, but keep in mind It only takes 1 person not having a mount to slow EVERYONE down and the Destination rule is primarily for the transition from one Type of Terrain to another.

Well also terrain currently has difficulty modifiers of 1,2,4 and 6. 1 being ocean, air or plains with road. 6 being mountains or jungle.

I'm wanting to use the numbers that already exist to create a system that can then expand to encompass new modes of travel rather than have to decide new rules every time. Gimme a bit to chew the idea up and offer it up tabled out.

Well currently your idea of horse movement places a 50 speed horse as faster than a 180 speed galley, does that bother anyone else? So I want to revamp the movement.
