When you are moving between hexes and you're mounted you start off the combat mounted correct? (correct me if I'm wrong) and this extends to being on a boat for movements and what not...But when you're flying as your means of movement through hexes you start off on the ground...as if you spotted a mob and decided to settle down on the ground and not start off from the air (being a piss poor hunter and giving up your higher ground advantage) ....
I was wondering what others opinons might be on the matter. My personal opinion is that if you are traveling through hexes you should maintain that state of movement when combat starts. A person on a mount starts on a mount, a person on foot starts on foot, and a person in the air starts off in the air.

k well my view is either
while travelling by flying you use a "sky" encounter table that has only creatures with flying or you just don't have encounters at all.

Leona's idea is actually a true one.
Wyatt's, whatever.

I honestly didn't think about that. It would add another layer of unique fighting and keep things fair.

Ya I think the original decision with that was made such that you wouldn't be at an undo advantage if two groups of players encountered each other.
