The Jianteere
They are an ancient anthropomorphic race with a tribal heritage, fearsome and noble creatures with a strong affinity to magic. The Jianteere are desert-dwelling sophisticated animal-like folk, not so often found to become adventurers due to their rather stoic behaivour and easy way of life. They might seem like a peaceful group at first, however they are only expressing this to the outsiders, since they are quite the warmongering type when quarrels are within their own territory. Their tendencies towards magic made them hunger for power, and since it is easily accessible for them, they just simply want even more.
Physical description:
Most of the race's members have a slender physique, though this doesn't mean they're weak. Depending on their animalistic self, many of their traits can vary.
Society:
Often forming bigger towns, forts or just warrior-cities, they might seem like a bloodthirsty band of killers or pillagers, but it only comes from their territorial nature that they wish to protect whatever they have with everything they have. Being a fighter or a soldier is more of a tradition to them than actual life form. In fact, their way of life is rather hedonistic from certain points of view, as they don't work more than needed, only as much as is required to finish the day and head to the local bath house, pub, or a garden to quarrel about.
They are almost exclusively herbivores, since they consider eating other animals as cannibalism. For the very same reason, they don't use other animals as beasts of burden for example. A Jianteere doesn't let his pack being carried by a mule, and they don't ride horses, never use hunting dogs (they don't hunt for prey anyway), etc. Jianteere are most often found living in deserts, though they can be found living in highlands, tundras, mountain plains or other extreme areas. They don't "live off the land", but instead try to claim it, much like the way how humans do, but they know the limits of the lands, only taking as much as they require and never extend themselves over too much. Wherever they live, they make sure everyone knows that the region is inhabited by Jianteere folk, pulling up massive fortresses wherever they decide to settle for longer periods of time.
Relations:
They feel relatively relaxed around most folk, although they show big interest towards dwarven technology and elven artistry and magic. They might feel themselves uneasy due to common prejudice towards beast races, and take any such very seriously.
Jianteere adventurers:
A Jianteere's general hunger for power serves as great potential to start an adventuring career in the rare case that the character doesn't wish to live by the idyllic Jianteere lifestyle. They are well suited leaders due to their prowess and intellect, but may choose to become Wizards, fighters, or the combination of the two. Jianteere soldiers are often trained in both sword and magic, though specialised members of the race are not uncommon either.
Names:
The length of a Jianteere person shows his connection to traditions. The longer a name is, the closer they are to their tribal ancestors. Most Jianteere today only pick up a single rather short name, consisting of 2-4 syllables, with a mixture of orcish tongue in their names.
Examples: Terzog, Zul-adar, Berkhul, Orilleu, etc.
Racial traits:
Type: Medium sized Monstrous Humanoid
They have darkvision of up to 60 feet.
+2 Intelligence, +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity
A Jianteere's clarity of mind and will to claim and protect makes their minds very open, however training with heavy armor made their muscles strong, if inflexible. Overreliance of magic and their lazy lifestyle turned them into clumsy warriors.
Greater Spell Resist (11 + character level)
Due to their greed for (most often magical) power and tribal heritage, they have instinctive knowledge of countering hostile magical enchantments.
Desert runner
Living in usually undesirable environments strengthened their hardiness further, allowing them to overexert their bodies in the long run, receiving a +4 racial bonus on Constitution checks and Fortitude saves to avoid fatigue and exhaustion, as well as any other ill effects from running, forced marches, starvation, thirst, and hot or cold environments.
Natural Armor
Most Jianteere are covered either by fur, or thick skin, giving them a Natural boost to AC of +1.
Jianteere base movement speed is 30 feet.
Languages: They begin with speaking Common, and Jianteerian. High intelligence characters can learn Dwarven, Elven, Tengu, Orcish, Gnoll, Draconic, and Goblin
I'd like to hear some feedback about this race, since I haven't seen much beast races in Calidor yet, and since I designed my character based on this, I'd like to know if you guys like the concept or not. Also if anyone wishes to create a faction based off them, go ahead.
