I propose the addition of ports to settlements.
The port should allow you to connect two settlements with ports as if they had a road between them. This gives people reasons to claim islands. As to how they would work I think they should cost ten times the amount of a road and each water connected city must build one for the benefits to start. Also one boat must be built and dedicated solely to the port system. This means the boat cant carry anyone or generate revenue. For this substantial investment one can receive the money from far off hexes as long as they are connected to a port hex by claim or road, and that port is connected to a port connected to the main hex group.
Example you have a port in your main city. and you take a boat to an island. You claim a hex there and build a port and boat. You can now receive the money from that hex and all hexes connected to that port hex. If you build a port on another island later you need to dedicate a boat to that port as well unless all the ports are in a line no more then 2 hexes apart.
I think that any faction that starts with a boat due to geography should also get a port.

Not really seeing a point to it since boats already travel at a rate of 1 movement point per hex.

the point has to do with getting money and resources from island hexes and hexes on the other side of the ocean. it has no effect on moment except to make one of your ships unusable.
right now there is no way to profit from an island. Even if you find a gold mine there is no way to connect it to your hexes. With a port you can do that.
This also makes Island nations viable. As they would have been totally unable to profit from anything they claim off of their island.

In that case, I concur. It sounds like a good idea and I like it.

yes that is a good point and I think that a blockade should disrupt a port rout.

This could also boost a need for a merchant coalition

I love the idea with some changes. A 'sea route' must be constructed. It would work in the same way a road would however would take less time and cost less. For example, it takes 100 gold and one week to construct a road. For a sea route you could construct, or 'map' two hexes a week costing 100 gold total. Once connected to the other port it establishes a 'trade route' which allows revenue to be generated. A ship would still be required to reach it however would not need to be dedicated. A sea route requires no maintenance.
Just my two cents.

Anyone who blockades a port, or otherwise raids the trade route, should also get part of the income the nation would have gotten. So if a trade route is bringing in 1000g, and you raid it, I think you should get maybe 40% (400g)?

Eh, I thought about that but decided against it. Afterall how are you going to construct that? And it's not all that necessary. You could just say that it's universal. All hexes connected to a port can transfer their revenue over to the capitol if it too has a port or is connected to a city or town that has a port.

I think that could be the case for the first week of the blockade but after that the two ports would stop sending each other ships until the blockade was cleared. It would however stop the capital city from collecting any revenue from the other cities.

Yes but it would essentially be a trade route, and all trade routes are mapped. It would also allow pirates to raid the routes without actually blockading ports.

That would make sense. But I dont think it would be "universal" as the ships are most likely to take the shortest possible route. BUT, you can always have raiding the route only decrease the income by abit, since the ships could swim around the blockade. Where as blockading the port would stop them from passing completely.
