When a mailbox is deleted accidentally in an Exchange server, it keeps the mailbox in the mailbox database and in a disabled state. The corresponding Active Directory user account is also removed. The mailbox will be in that state until its retention period expiry. By default it is 30 days. Beyond that the mailbox will be deleted permanently.
The retention policy for the deleted mailbox can be verified by following steps:
1. Go to Exchange Management Console(EMC)
2. Expand Microsoft Exchange On-Premises in the navigation pane
3. Expand Organization Configuration
4. Select Mailbox for which you wish to check the retention policy
5. Choose the Database Management tab in the Mailbox pane
6. Right click on Mailbox Database that you wish to check
7. Choose Properties and click on Limits Tab
8. Check the retention settings and adjust as your need
